PASE: Putty SSHVNC

Brief

Using Putty and SSH for secure VNC to i5/OS. VNC has been the i5/OS documented way of using X (GUI) on PASE and Java. However, I recommend if you have the ability to use linux with ssh -X (LinuxSSH), or Cygwin+SSH with ssh -Y (CygwinSSH), I believe you will be happier with X GUI performance.

Dependencies

Configuration

putty.exe
Session:
host:myi5.domain port: 22
connection type: x SSH
SSH...
X11:
x enable X11 forwarding
X display: localhost:0
x MIT-Magic
Tunnels:
source port: 5909 # run netstat -a on your PC (pick non-in-use)
destination: myi5.domain:55902 # vncserver port (see i5/OS below)
55901 - myi5.domain:1
55902 - myi5.domain:2
:
5590n - myi5.domain:n

Example

-------------------------
i5/OS:
call qp2term
Make sure sshd is running on the target i5osbox (SSHSetup above).
>ps -ef | grep sshd
You may need to set up one time VNC configuration:
>mkdir '/home/youruserid/.vnc'
i5OS>QAPTL/VNCPASSWD USEHOME(*NO) PWDFILE('/home/youruserid/.vnc/passwd')
Start vncserver on i5/OS:
>/QOpenSys/QIBM/ProdData/DeveloperTools/vnc/vncserver&
or
i5OS>STRPTL CLIENT(*VNC)
vncserver will start and report "myi5.domain:n"
To end vncserver on i5/OS:
>/QOpenSys/QIBM/ProdData/DeveloperTools/vnc/vncserver -kill :n
-------------------------
PC:
>click the putty.exe icon and select the session above.
>Start VNC viewer (icon)
VNC Server: localhost:5909 -- same as putty source port

Performance

The newer versions of vncserver are much improved over the original VNC shipped in the PRPQ. However, I notice the additional load on the i5/OS of vncserver plus a window manager (icewm) added to a X GUI application (xterm, nedit, ez, etc), causes the mouse graphics to “jerk” slightly.
